The latest supplier to benefit from the £160m F-35 project at RAT Lakenheath is construction specialist Mick George Ltd who has landed the Earthworks package on behalf of MJS construction.
The Kier-VolkerFitzpatrick joint venture will deliver a series of new infrastructure at the Suffolk airbase which from 2021 will be the first permanent home in Europe of the US Air Force F-35 fighter jet.
The F-35 programme involves construction and renovation of numerous buildings, including a six-bay flight simulator, an aircraft maintenance unit, storage facilities, new hangers and 42 aircraft parking aprons.
West Suffolk has been hosting U.S Airmen for over 50 years and it is envisaged that the latest developments will further strengthen the historic military ties between the two nations, as well as the operating partnership between the RAF and the US Air Force.
Mick George, Managing Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’The partners driving the project should be applauded for procuring suppliers and recruits within a 75-mile radius. With as many as 700 people estimated to be on-site at any one time, this should only be a positive for the local economy.’’
George continued: ‘’We’ve worked on many RAF premises, both past and present. This particular location has a rich heritage, so we’re pleased to be involved with the project.’’
