Laying derelict for almost 20 years after closing its doors, Severalls Hospital, Colchester, is currently undergoing major demolition works to the decaying shell that still remains, making way for a restoration project that incorporates 730 homes on the former psychiatric unit.
To the naked eye, the dilapidated site may seem in extreme state of disrepair, but Mick George Ltd who are completing the works, continue to uncover hidden treasure lurking within the buildings.
Having re-homed a colony of European Honey Bees last month, the business has followed up with the ‘much-loved chapel organ. Originally planned to be put in to storage, the organ now has an overseas destination.
La Richardais church in Brittany, close to the popular holiday destination of Dinard, will now site the organ, after a representative visited the location. Dismantling the organ is anticipated to take up to 3 days, before it travels across the channel.
Mr Cordé, spokesperson at La Richardais church said: “When I saw the pictures of the organ, I found this immediately appealing and so cute. I immediately thought this organ could be reinstalled in a church in the area of Dinard, the town of La Richardais. This church never had any pipe organ so it’s a beautiful occasion. The priest and the Mayor of La Richardais are really enthusiastic.”
The organ remains in relatively good condition considering its age and current surroundings. Also saved from the Severalls chapel are 6ft tall stained glass windows and a bell, which will go into storage.
Phil Hayden, Demolition Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’Projects with such heritage often through up desirable items such as this. We recognise that on many occasions the pieces could be put to much better use, and therefore do all we can to find a suitable home.’’
