03.11.2016 - Mick George Ltd announced in Cambridgeshire’s Elite

Grant Thornton has provided an insight into the financial performance of the county’s businesses over the last 12 months with the announcement of Cambridgeshire’s top 100 companies in 2016. The analysis provides a yardstick in which the county can assess its economic standing and organisations can also benchmark against their peers.

The outlook appeared somewhat mixed, predominantly due to the uncertainty at present surrounding the actual effects of Brexit. Turnover of the leading firms increased 1.6% to £10.25bn, while collective EBITDA and pre-tax profits dipped.
Interestingly, people costs rose 4%, which Darren Bear, Grant Thornton, believes is a result of ‘growing confidence of businesses to invest in the long-term, taking measured risks on assets and people.’

While the top 100 included 14 new entrants, and was dominated by technology firms, the sector that has grown fastest in terms of turnover, profit and people is property and construction, and as Bear (GT) acknowledged, ‘you only have to look at how the skyline of Cambridge is changing to see the evidence’.

Supporting many of the findings, is local construction and waste management business, Mick George Ltd, who has for the third year running advanced up the table, now positioned within the top 25.

Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd said: ‘’The figures released paint a buoyant picture of the business climate around the county and demonstrates why Cambridgeshire is a thriving place to do business’’.

Stump continued: ‘’Much of the evidence suggests embracing change and planning for the future is fundamental to achieving in a challenging and competitive environment. As a business, we recognise our audience and industry in which we operate is constantly evolving so it’s important for us to adopt an innovative approach to remain at the forefront. Our product and service portfolio continues to expand, as does the in-house support we offer to ensure our first-class service remains. Within the last year, our employee headcount has expanded by over 200.’’
