08.01.16 - Mick George Driver Academy Kicks in to Full Throttle

Back in July 2015, the Mick George Training Academy was launched and has gone from strength to strength. The initiative was developed to equip new drivers with all the skills they need to ensure safe and aware driving practices in line with guidelines set out by CLOCS and FORS accreditation.

Due to increased demand the company has invested in a dedicated vehicle specifically for training purposes, which has kindly been sponsored by DAF Ford & Slater who are strong advocates of the scheme and long term suppliers to the Mick George Ltd fleet of vehicles. All applicants enrolled on the course will complete practical exercises from this vehicle containing the latest state of the technology and surroundings.

Steve Halliday, Truck Sales Manager at Ford and Slater stated: “Driver training and development is something which we are passionate about so we’re delighted to be able to support Mick George Ltd with this initiative. The DAF CF Space Cab provides the ideal working environment to help drivers perform at their best. We are confident it will be the perfect training vehicle for the Mick George Driver Academy.”

The first applicant to experience the new lorry was Darren Bailey who is currently at the final stage of the process. ‘’Before my current role I have been a driver for the majority of my career and wish to continue in that profession. Having researched the opportunity to gain such qualifications, the Mick George Driver Academy was far and away the best option. The experience has been exciting, challenging and unnerving but the guidance of the trainer has helped ease the situation immensely. I’ve enjoyed the course and hope to progress with Mick George Ltd in the future,” said Driver Academy Student Darren Bailey.

The Mick George Driver Academy offers the chance to obtain your LGV C (Class 2) license with the added benefit of gaining employment as a professional LGV driver within Mick George Ltd’s rapidly expanding business.

There are three stages to the scheme which contain various theory or practical based components that need to be passed before progressing, completing and gaining your qualification.

Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’We are particularly grateful to DAF Ford & Slater for their fantastic support. They, like ourselves recognise the importance and benefit of the Mick George Driver Academy.’’

Stump continued: ‘’Not only does it provide fantastic career prospects and the opportunity to earn a substantial salary, it goes along way to overcoming the current shortfall of lorry drivers in the UK which is estimated to be roughly 45,000. Importantly for Mick George Ltd, it provides us with a sustainable source of HGV drivers to achieve the high targets the business sets itself.’’
