Leicester Skip of Gold Winners

For the past two months, Mick George Ltd has been running its ‘Skip of Gold’ competition in Leicestershire, providing local sports clubs and community groups the chance to win £1,000.

Over 100 applications were proposed before a shortlist of the 30 most deserving cases were put forward to the voting stage. In excess of 1,300 votes were submitted ahead of the eventual winners being selected based on the most votes received.

It was certainly a closely contested battle, with less than 1% separating the top three positions. Congratulations to Groby Community Library for scooping the inaugural Leicestershire ‘Skip of Gold’ accolade. The group managed to edge out Sacred Heart Catholic Voluntary Academy who were worthy runners-up, while third position was secured by 4th Leicestershire Scout Group.

The Library is a focal point of the Groby Village, and having just celebrated its first year anniversary since becoming ‘community run’, owing thanks to the 30 volunteers and trustees who have dedicated their time and efforts, the prize fund will be much welcomed news.

Since functioning as a ‘Community Library’, both members and book loans have significantly increased, as have the number of services that the Library now provides. A Jigsaw lending facility, book swap shelf, adult and children's colouring books, and children's toys are all now prevalent within the premises.

However, one area of the Library which was inherited and remains slightly run-down is the toilet facilities, formerly only available to employees. It is anticipated that the funds generated from winning the competition will permit those fortunes to change, with additional baby and disabled provisions to be incorporated.

Any remaining funds from the renovations will be utilised to promote the Library, hoping to further boost membership. Already home to children reading groups and knitting groups, as well as other regular craft events for families to enjoy during holiday periods, the hope is to encourage more individuals to the Library in the future.

They said:

Christine Fowler, Trustee at Groby Community Library said: ‘’The Library provides a safe and welcoming environment for all village residents, young and old to come and meet. The greater offering that we now provide to visitors relies on kind donations, which limits the amount we’re able to upgrade. Larger, more structural improvements require funds from elsewhere, so we’re extremely grateful to Mick George Ltd and everyone who has offered their support.’’

Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd: ‘’It was fantastic to see the community embrace the Skip of Gold competition, the support that the various groups received was overwhelming. This is the first time that we have run the competition in Leicestershire and it’s clear to see by the vast number of entries just how important this support can be for the development of each nomination.’’

Stump Continued: ‘’We are increasingly active within the Leicestershire area supporting activities, individuals, clubs and charities at all levels. The Mick George Skip of Gold competition provides a little more insight to what the community really care about and are involved in within their daily lives. The £1,000 prize fund will undoubtedly make a real difference, and should help build to a brighter future. We are proud of our community initiatives and look forward to any forthcoming engagement.’’
