Landfill Tax Receipts in Decline

A report based on the 2022/23 financial year has found that landfill tax receipts have fallen by 6% from the previous year, to £626 million.

What are Landfill Tax Receipts?

First introduced back in 1996, landfill tax receipts are a tax imposed on businesses disposing of waste for landfill.

The concept was brought in to further deter businesses from sending their waste to landfill and to encourage alternative waste disposal such as recycling, composting, and recovery.

Yearly Landfill Tonnages Fall

A report based on the 2022/23 financial year has found that landfill tax receipts have fallen by 6% from the previous year, to £626 million.

The report has found that this drop has translated to tonnages also, with a 2% fall year on year (421,000 tonnes).

Landfill Tax Receipt Overview

In the last ten years, landfill tax receipts have continued to decline. Once at a massive £1.189 billion in the 2013/14 financial year, they have fallen nearly 50% since then which shows clear evidence to suggest that increases in alternative waste disposal are having a significantly positive effect.
