03.05.2016 - Houghton and Wyton Church gains a new voice
St Mary's is the spiritual home for the residents of Houghton, Wyton and Wyton-on-the-Hill, together with other communities who reside in the nearby vicinity. Drawn by its friendly, welcoming congregation, its central Anglican churchmanship with a light catholic flavour, as well as the varied and uplifting worship, the church is a popular choice among the local population.
Dating back to the thirteenth century, naturally certain areas of the church have become dated and require refurbishment to bring out the beauty and practicality of the environment. One of the crucial areas that needed urgent attention was the organ, which was providing sub-standard sound due to damaged internal parts.
Thanks to funding from local business Mick George Ltd, The Parochial Church Council has been able to update the equipment which has subsequently enhanced the sound quality to the benefit of the congregation and choir.
Mike Bachelor, Churchwarden said: “The PCC of St Mary's CofE Houghton with Wyton wish to express our gratitude to Mick George Ltd for its generous grant of £5,000 which enabled us to complete the fundraising and allow the restoration of the manual organ. The works are now complete and, without this grant, the works would have had to be delayed to the detriment of the organ.”
Jon Stump, Finance Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’Cleary the organ is a critical part to the daily functionality of the church, so it was vital that it was back in use at the earliest opportunity. We recognise that funds aren’t always easy to come by for local projects such as this, so we’re happy to have been able to assist.’’
