23.08.2016 - Handy Hints on Decking Installation

Deck yourself out this Summer!

Decking really is a multipurpose and aesthetically pleasing outdoor surface, providing a contemporary option to the traditional paving, turf or gravel alternative. Whether it’s a standalone feature to take advantage of the Garden’s ‘sun trap’ or an extension to your internal space, directly outside the house, it will certainly live up to expectation!

1. Preparation – Remove turf from the area where the deck will be constructed, compressing soil, and cover with weed membrane, before adding gravel to prevent unwanted greenery appearing.

2. Foundation Base – Place concrete slabs in each corner to form a solid base for the Decking to sit, clear of the damp ground.

3. Create Box Frame – Run framing timber along the perimeter edge of designated area. Ensure they are level and parallel before cutting to appropriate length and fixing together at each corner.

4. Fix Joists – Lay joists inside the frame at 400mm intervals running in the opposite direction to the deckboards at completion. Fix to outer frame. Fit ‘noggings’ sporadically between inner joists for extra strength.

5. Border – Place one deckboard on each of the four sides of the frame and mitre cut at 45’ degrees where the planks meet, before adjoining to create a border.

6. Inner Planks – Sit the remaining deckboards inside this border, running in the same direction and make any cuts that maybe required. Fix both the border and inner deckboards to the frame and joists, 5mm apart to create a rigid surface.

7. Outside edge – Fix a deckboard vertically to the front, back and sides of the frame, ensuring the edges are flush to the outer panels, hiding the frame.

8. Grab a cuppa, you’re all done – Sit back and enjoy your new raised deck
