Defra launches waste prevention programme consultation on Global Recycling Day
A consultation has been launched by the UK Government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) regarding its Waste Prevention Programme for England, which aims to prevent waste by increasing the 3 R’s; reuse, repair and remanufacturing of products, among other measures.
The Programme focuses on preventing waste across seven sectors: construction; textiles; furniture; electrical and electronics products; road vehicles; packaging, plastics and single-use items; and food. It lays out potential government action on waste prevention, as well as how the industry is currently tackling the issue, and what more can be done going forward.
The Government’s consultation will gather responses on its proposals for textiles from stakeholders until the end of 2022. One such proposal is an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) initiative, which would ensure that the industry provides partial subsidies to the costs of recycling.
