Chris Turner Statue Unveiling

Just shy of two years ago, the Chris Turner Statues Fund was initiated, and today, all involved have got their just-rewards.

Committee members, POSH management, players, fans and business members from around the City gathered at the ABAX Stadium, joining the family of Chris Turner, to officially unveil the lifesize Bronze Statuette of the clubs former captain, manager and chairman.

Located outside the North Stand on London Road, the new feature owes largely to the generous donations made by interested associates, which in its entirety exceeded a staggering £103,718. Without doubt, the iconic focal point will certainly be a befitting way to commemorate Chris, and to pay respects for all his efforts at Peterborough United FC over the years.

Official POSH Kit Sponsor, and local business Mick George Ltd provided invaluable support, gifting £7,000 to the cause.

The Chris Turner Statue Fund Committee, said: “We owe a massive debt of gratitude to supporters of the Chris Turner Statue Fund who have helped us make this dream become a reality. Chris Turner was integral in bringing the city together and it has been overwhelming that the city has reunited to remember him.’’

Also in attendance on the day was the sculptor who commissioned the statue, Sean Hedges Quinn, who also developed statues in memory of greats such as, Sir Bobby Robson and Sir Alf Ramsey.

A nice touch from the club that was particularly well received, was the decision to stock a retro 1992 home shirt, arguably Turner’s finest moment as he guided his POSH side to victory at Wembley Stadium.

They said:

Neil Johnson, Technical Director at Mick George Ltd commented: ‘’It only seems like yesterday that the Chris Turner Memorial Match between Peterborough United and Cambridge United was played, and to think that some twenty-four months later that an incredible sum of over £100,000 would have been raised, is an incredible achievement.’’

Johnson continued: “The work of the Committee has been unique, unprecedented, and relentless in their search for funds and pledges to produce this amazing tribute. As with the donations provided by ourselves, those who have contributed should be proud of this landmark, which will remain a part of the club’s history for a long time to come.’’
