Ashmount School Demolition
The premises which is located adjacent to the Epinal Way junction, is currently lying vacant since the former special education facility was relocated to Charnwood College Campus, Thorpe Hill, Loughborough back in 2014.
The proposal for a new 32 dwelling housing development was given the green light from Charnwood Borough Council Plan’s Committee earlier this year, following submission of plans from Leicester County Council at the request of Councillor Jonathan Morgan.
According to the ‘Design and Access’ statement that accompanied the site’s application, ‘’The development would help to meet the housing needs of the Borough and create a high quality residential environment which respects the character and amenities of its surroundings and provides clear community benefits for the wider area.’’
It is proposed that up to 30 percent of the dwellings will be in the form of affordable housing.
The illustrative masterplan, reveals blocks of housing around a single central access into the site. Vehicle and pedestrian access to the location would be directly off Beacon Road, involving the reopening of an existing access into the former school. This access is currently closed off, as a separate shared access is being utilised to serve the two nearby schools.
At present, the Sacred Heart Romain Catholic Primary School which is positioned to the south-west of the development is using the site as an overspill car-park. The non-formal arrangement will stop at the commencement of the scheme.
