Global Waste Volumes
A report has warned that municipal solid waste is estimated to grow by 56% by 2025 which would mean global waste volumes would surpass 3.8 billion tonnes.
The report outlines the importance of developing new waste management strategies, especially in countries where the collection and management of waste is not as effective as within the UK.
Urgent Action Required for Waste Crisis
It is estimated that 2.1 billion tonnes of municipal waste was generated globally last year and that figure is only increasing. The report suggests that urgent action is required to reduce the volume of waste being produced and the focus needs to be shifted towards recycling efforts and a circular economy model.
The waste reduction plan will require collaboration between different institutions as well as behavioural changes from consumers on a global scale.
